Requirements
- WordPress 6.7 or later
- PHP 7.4 or later (8.1 or later recommended)
- WooCommerce, for product and order answers
- An account with at least one AI service, and its API key
Installing Yelva Chat
- In your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin.
- Search for Yelva Chat.
- Click Install Now, then Activate.
- You’ll find the settings under Yelva Chat in the dashboard menu.
When you activate the plugin, it may ask whether you’d like to share some basic, non-sensitive information to help us improve it. This is optional. Click Skip and everything works the same.
Connecting your AI services
Yelva Chat uses your own AI service account, so you control your costs. You’ll need an API key, which is a private password-like code that your AI service gives you.
- Create an account with an AI service and generate an API key in its dashboard.
- In WordPress, go to Yelva Chat → AI services.
- In the Main service slot, enter the service details and paste your API key.
- Click Test connection. A green tick means it’s working.
- Repeat for the Backup service slot. A backup from a different company gives the best protection.
If the main service is down, too slow or out of quota, Yelva Chat automatically sends the question to the backup. The free version has two slots. Pro has four, and you can choose the order they’re tried in.
Keep your API keys private. Never share them by email or in support forums.
Choosing where the chat appears
Go to Yelva Chat → Display. In the free version, you can show the chat on every page or on the homepage only. To keep checkout distraction-free, the chat is hidden on checkout and account pages by default.
Pro adds page rules, so you can show or hide the chat on any page you choose. You can also change the chat window title, the message box hint and the AI label wording.
Teaching it about your store
Yelva Chat already reads your product information. To help it answer other questions well, add short answers about your store in Yelva Chat → Knowledge, for example:
- Shipping times and costs
- Returns and exchanges
- Payment methods
- Opening hours and contact details
Write answers the way you’d explain them to a customer. Pro adds bulk import, so you can add many answers at once, and an optional report of questions the assistant couldn’t answer.
The AI assistant label
By default, the chat window tells visitors they’re talking to an AI assistant. We recommend keeping this on. It builds trust, and in some places the law expects it. You can switch it off in Yelva Chat → Display.
Installing Pro and your licence
- After you buy, you’ll get an email with your licence key and a download link.
- Go to Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin and upload the Pro zip file.
- Activate it, then enter your licence key when asked.
- Your settings from the free version are kept.
You can manage your licence, invoices and websites at any time in your customer account, provided by our reseller, Freemius.
Privacy and your visitors
Conversations are stored in your own WordPress database and sent to the AI services you connect, so they can write the answers. Yelva doesn’t receive your customers’ chats.
Because the chat sends visitor messages to an AI service, add a short note about it to your own store’s privacy policy. Name the AI services you use and say how long you keep chats. Pro can delete old chats automatically.
Troubleshooting
The chat window doesn’t appear
Check that the chat is switched on in Yelva Chat → Display and that you’re not on a hidden page, such as checkout. If you use a caching plugin, clear its cache, then reload the page.
The assistant replies with an error or doesn’t reply
Go to Yelva Chat → AI services and click Test connection for each service. Check that your API key is correct and that your AI service account still has credit or free allowance left. Adding a backup service prevents most of these problems.
Answers about products are wrong or out of date
Make sure the product details in WooCommerce are correct, because Yelva Chat reads them from your store. Add extra details in Yelva Chat → Knowledge if needed.
Replies are slow
Some AI services are faster than others. Try a faster service as your main one, or lower the maximum reply length in the settings.
Getting help
Free version questions are welcome in the Yelva Chat support forum on WordPress.org, where answers help everyone. Pro customers can email info@wpyelva.com for priority help.
